What is CAS?

CAS (Creativity – Activity – Service) is an extra-curricular programme with personal development as the aim to make the student challenge his creativity, making him more involved in physical activity on a personal basis, – and more involved in sosial activity of different types.

The CAS programme corresponds to on average approximately two hours a week not included on the student’s ordinary school timetable, and all students get a CAS adviser for the planning of the CAS activities. The planned CAS activities is undertaken over an 18 month period.

CAS is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity and service defined as follows.

  • Creativity—exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance.
  • Activity—physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Service—collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.

CAS aims to develop students who:

  • enjoy and find significance in a range of CAS experiences
  • purposefully reflect upon their experiences
  • identify goals, develop strategies and determine further actions for personal growth
  • explore new possibilities, embrace new challenges and adapt to new roles
  • actively participate in planned, sustained and collaborative CAS projects
  • understand they are members of local and global communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment.

CAS lies at the heart of an IB Diploma Programme education, and all students must have their CAS programme approved to get a Diploma.

Bumblebees!

Bumblebees and other insects are disappearing from many ecosystems around the world, including Norway. Why is that a problem? What can YOU do to help them? To focus on these important questions for sustainability, one of the IB students helped the biology teacher to make an exhibition about bumblebees in the school’s library.

Vardafjell Book and Film club

bokogfilmklubb

Four girls have started a book and film club at Vardafjell! They invite all Vardafjell students to meet every second week – a new topic will be discussed every month. First time they discuss a chosen book and two weeks later they meet to watch the movie. First topic was friendship 🙂

Service – education project

Vardafjell has a collaboration with Strømmestiftelsen, where the students are fund-raising for education in Nepal. One of our IB students made it her CAS Project. She went to Nepal and after coming home she advocated to the rest of the school the importance of helping others:

“For my CAS project I travelled to Nepal with Strømmestiftelsen as a representative for Vardafjell, in which I learned more about a project called “Sjef i eget liv.” It was quite the impactful experience, and it made me question just how much in my life I take for granted, like being able to choose who I am going to marry, or if I am going to marry anyone at all. During this trip I got to experience a completely different culture, meet and talk with so many inspiring people, and while there were some strong impressions and difficult situations, I still had a great time and made many new friends. Because of CAS, I kept thinking about how this experience was going to help me to develop as a person, which is why I ended up sitting down every night with a small group of people that I travelled with, and discuss what we learned and experienced that day. The memories of that trip is something that I will carry with me for a long time, and I believe that it has made me more aware of my privileges and develop as a person, even if it is just a little bit.”
